Portland: Cannon Beach Coastal Escape
A same-day drive from Portland to Cannon Beach for the view of Haystack Rock, town time, and the ocean. Tide pools are not the plan, and the surf is not a playground.

The day
You ride to the coast, see Haystack Rock from the beach or the safe overlooks, and have real time in town for lunch and a look in the shops. Walking on the sand is welcome when the beach is open. Walking onto rocks, into tide pools, or near the surf is not part of the trip and is not led. Sneaker waves and logs in the wash are the reason. If weather closes the beach, the day stays in town and at a protected viewpoint.

Portland-area meeting point
Briefing and departure. The coast drive is the long leg of the day.
If this stop is closed: A nearby curb if needed.

Late morning
Haystack Rock and the beach
Cannon Beach
Time to see the rock, take photos, and walk the open beach if you want to. Rocks, tide pools, and the wet sand near the surf are off the plan.
If this stop is closed: A protected viewpoint and the town if the beach is unsafe or closed.
-
12:30 PM
Lunch on your own
Cannon Beach
You choose and pay for lunch. Weekends are busy. We do not pretend a table is being held.
If this stop is closed: A market or the next open cafe.
-
2:15 PM
Town time and coffee
Cannon Beach shops and galleries
A wander through town. What is open depends on the day of the week and the season.
If this stop is closed: More time at a safe viewpoint if the main street is closed.

The driver starts back while there is still daylight in most of the year. Winter days are shorter, and the schedule keeps the beach time inside daylight.
If this stop is closed: The arrival window moves with traffic or weather.

Estimated window, not a fixed minute.
Meals
Meals are not included. Lunch, coffee, and snacks are yours to buy during the free time on the schedule.
Pickup and drop-off
One agreed Portland pickup, preferably on the west or downtown side so the drive to US 26 starts cleanly. The street address is confirmed after we accept the request.
- Downtown Portland
- Northwest or southwest Portland
- A westside point near US 26, agreed before the day
The same Portland-area point. The return includes a buffer for US 26.
Who it suits, and access
Easy. Beach walking is optional and can be soft sand. No scramble and no tide-pool walk.
Friends, couples, and families who want the coast for a day and can be back in Portland that evening. Not a surfing trip and not a tide-pool tour.
Town sidewalks are the easy part. The beach is sand and can be a long soft walk to a view of the rock. You can enjoy the day from town and a roadside or dune viewpoint if sand is a poor fit. Ask us in your request if someone in the group uses a mobility aid.
Public restrooms in Cannon Beach when open. Beach access points do not all have facilities.
Weather and closures
Fog, wind, and rain are ordinary and do not cancel the day. High surf, a closed beach approach, or an unsafe shoreline means we stay off the sand and use town and a protected view. We will not send guests onto rocks or into the wash.
If Cannon Beach access is restricted, the day uses a verified viewpoint and town time in Cannon Beach or the next open coastal town on the same drive home. Tide pools are never the backup plan.
Bring
- A warm layer; the beach wind is colder than Portland
- Shoes you can take onto sand
- A way to pay for your own lunch
- A small bag for sandy layers
Cancellation
A request does not take payment and does not hold the date. Once a day is confirmed, cancellation follows the terms on this website. A free date change is not promised. This is not trip-cancellation insurance.

Tell us the group, the pickup, and the day you want. We reply within 24 hours, including weekdays.
