The day

The day starts with the wide view from Vista House at Crown Point, then a waterfall stop that does not require a strenuous hike. Latourell Falls gives you a short, optional walk to a lower view. Multnomah Falls is a hopeful stop, not a promise: timed entry, parking, and trail closures decide it on the day. If it is not practical, the day still has the gorge view and another accessible stop. You buy your own lunch.

Schedule

Times are a plan, not a promise. Traffic, a closure, or a full parking lot can move them.

  1. 9:00 AM

    Pickup

    Portland-area meeting point

Briefing and departure. The driver leaves time for the scenic highway, which is slower than the freeway.

If this stop is closed: A nearby legal curb.

  2. 10:00 AM

    Crown Point and Vista House

    Historic Columbia River Highway

The wide river view from Crown Point. Going inside Vista House depends on its hours that day.

If this stop is closed: A roadside gorge view if the building or the spur road is closed.

  3. 11:15 AM

    Latourell Falls viewpoint

    Latourell Falls

A look at the falls. The short path to the lower view is optional and can be wet. Staying at the upper view still counts as the stop.

If this stop is closed: Skip it if the path or lot is closed.

  4. 12:15 PM

    Lunch on your own

A gorge lodge, Multnomah Falls lodge area, or Troutdale if timing is better

You pay for your own meal. We do not hold a restaurant reservation as part of this trip.

If this stop is closed: Troutdale if the lodge area is too crowded or closed.

  5. 1:45 PM

One more waterfall view, if it is practical

Multnomah Falls or another open viewpoint

Multnomah Falls is included only when parking and access work for this group on this date. It is not sold as a guaranteed stop.

If this stop is closed: Bridal Veil or another preapproved roadside viewpoint, then the drive home.

  6. 2:45 PM

    Return to Portland

    I-84 west

Back toward the city before the heaviest of the afternoon when the clock allows.

If this stop is closed: The drop-off window moves with traffic.

  7. 4:00–5:00 PM

    Drop-off

    Portland-area meeting point

    Estimated window.

Meals

Meals are not included. Lunch, coffee, and snacks are yours to buy during the free time on the schedule.

Pickup and drop-off

One agreed pickup in Portland: downtown, the close-in eastside, or a point near I-84 or I-5. The street address is confirmed after we accept the request.

  • Downtown Portland
  • Close-in eastside
  • Near I-84
  • Near I-5, agreed before the day

The same Portland-area point. Afternoon I-84 traffic is the reason the return is a window.

Who it suits, and access

Easy at the viewpoints. The optional Latourell path can feel moderate when it is wet. No one has to take it.

Travelers who want the gorge without committing to a trail. Families are welcome when everyone can handle the drives and a short optional walk.

Vista House has stairs to some levels; the main view can be seen without a long hike. Latourell’s lower path can be slick and uneven, and it is optional. Tell us about mobility needs in your request. The van itself is not advertised as wheelchair accessible until that vehicle is confirmed.

Restrooms at Vista House and at major falls areas when open. Smaller viewpoints may have none.

Weather and closures

The gorge makes its own weather. Mist and rain are normal. Ice, a closed highway, or a closed trail means we use the fallback stops. A particular waterfall is never guaranteed for a future date.

If Crown Point, Latourell, or Multnomah cannot take the group, the day uses another accessible gorge viewpoint or a stop in Troutdale. We do not replace a closure with an unplanned hike.

Bring

  • Shoes with grip for wet pavement
  • A light jacket
  • A way to pay for your own lunch
  • Patience if a lot is full and we change a stop

Cancellation

A request does not take payment and does not hold the date. Once a day is confirmed, cancellation follows the terms on this website. A free date change is not promised. This is not trip-cancellation insurance.
